Automobile Black Boxes Studied in PA

At a glance:

An "event data recorder" (EDR) is the automobile version of the famous airplane "black box". Carmakers have been putting EDRs into some models for the past ten years, but now there is pending legislation in Pennsylvania aimed at forcing car dealers to tell buyers whether their model has one and giving consumers the choice of whether to release the information in the box to investigators in case of an accident. 
 
Since the box contains data on seatbelt use, speed and direction and whether the vehicle was being braked or accelerated, it is viewed by some as a privacy issue. 
 
The bill has been sent back to committee and a vote is expected this fall. 
 
 
 


Pa. Senate wants hearings on bill about data recorders in vehicles

HARRISBURG -- A bill to require car dealers to tell car buyers if an automobile contains an event data recorder, or EDR, that records accident-related information, suffered a serious setback yesterday.
 
Instead of voting on the bill, as supporters had hoped, the state Senate voted to delay action by sending it back to the Transportation Committee. The panel will hold hearings around the state this summer, but the measure won't come up for a vote before October, said Sen. Roger Madigan, R-Bradford, transportation chairman
