Regional Recall Policy Can Stay

The practice of limiting vehicle recalls by region can continue, according to a ruling by a federal appeals court. 
 
The policy was challenged by consumer groups, but the court ruled that "policy" is not "law" so there were no grounds for changing it. 
 
Some recalls are based on regional conditions such as cold or hot weather or presence of road salt, but this lead to some perceived inequities and disagreements about the role of regional conditions in the product defect. 
 


Federal Court Upholds Regional Auto Recalls

A federal appeals court has upheld the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration policy that allows automakers to limit some vehicle recalls by region.
 
Public Citizen and the Center for Auto Safety had challenged the NHTSA policy as an attempt to change federal law without public comment
