Japanese Transport Ministry Reports 2nd Highest Number of Auto Recalls Ordered in 2005

With 309 notices affecting over 5 million vehicles, the Japanese Transport Ministry reported that 2005 brought the second highest number of recalls ever. This was an improvement over last year which holds the record for recalls with 438 recalls reported and over 7.5 million vehicles affected, most of which were prompted by Mitsubishi which was caught in numerous cover-ups and scandals relating to vehicle defects.

Both numbers were smaller than record highs in fiscal 2004, when the corresponding numbers shot up to 438 reports and 7.56 million vehicles in the aftermath of a slew of defect coverups and recalls by Mitsubishi Fuso & Bus Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
