Electronic Stability Control Systems Work Well

A new study reveals that electronic stability control mechanisms in SUVs and passenger cars work very well to prevent rollovers. 
 
Chances of a fatal rollover crash were reduced by 73 per cent in SUVs and 40 per cent in regular automobiles. 
 
Monitors in these systems can detect trouble points in stability, and can apply individual wheel brakes or alter engine speed to help drivers maintain control. 
 
The systems are standard in many SUVs including the new Ford Explorers and in almost half new car models. When it is available as an option, the acceptance rate is low, however.

A new study provides one of the most enthusiastic endorsements of electronic stability control, the anti-skid/anti-rollover system that is not required by law and which few buyers order if given a choice.
 
Researchers at the University of Michigan, based on an analysis of eight years of government vehicle crash statistics, say the systems can reduce the chances of a fatal rollover crash by 73 percent in sport utility vehicles and 40 percent in passenger cars. Non-fatal loss-of-control crashes are reduced by 70 percent for SUVs and 55 percent for passenger cars, they said, and the benefits are even more dramatic in poor weather conditions
